The city of Launceston is the second largest city in Tasmania- the island located in the south of Australia. Visitors can expect some exciting and interesting attractions in the city. The Cataract Gorge, the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, Prince´s Square or Penny Royal World are just some of the places that you should not miss. Begin your trip with the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery- a prestigious museum for present day as well as historic art. A part of the museum deals with the art of the original inhabitants of Australia- the Aborigines. In addition a further part worth seeing is the history of the convicts. Further themes explore metal, Tasmanian art and there is also a Planetarium for those of you that are curious. The museum opens the doors to the end of the 19th century, to be more exact 1891. The museum has two different locations- one in the Royal Park and one in the Inveresk- which can be found north and south of the River North Esk and can be reached easily in your car hire.
You can find the Inveresk on the Invermay road in the centre of the city. If you want to change the location to the Royal Park – in your cheap car hire, follow the street in a southerly direction over the North Esk River and turn into the Cimitiere Street, follow this street until you reach the Charles street. When you turn into this street, you have to turn into Paterson Street and you would have reached the Royal Park where you will find the second museum. Alternatively this location also offers you the opportunity to take a walk along the North Esk River that you will find about 2km away.
Not far from the Royal Park you will find a further attraction of the city. The Prince´s Square in the centre of the town is well liked and often visited in Launceston. Above all for the old buildings in their Victorian style as well as the spring fountains. It’s definitely worth a visit. You will find the Prince’s square with your hire car on the corner of St. John Street and Elizabeth Street. A somewhat pleasant change is a visit to the Theme Park- Penny Royal World has been in business since the 19th century. The amusement park is inviting with its many different historical attractions which in part have been re-built as well as present day history. Within the park grounds runs an old tramway as well as a historical paddle steamer. The main attractions are the historical water mill and a historical wind mill. You will find the Theme Park in Paterson Street 147 which is also very close to the centre of the city.
To make full use of a day trip in the natural environment, we recommend the Cataract Gorge Park. The impressive gorges run through forest covered hills and are bordered by two rivers, the South Esk River and the Tamar River. For many visitors the park is the main destination in the surrounding area and also the inhabitants of the city use this park for picnics. You can best reach this park in your car hire- when you leave the Highway 1 by Franklin Street and follow in a westerly direction. The street changes its name more than once. From Franklin Street to Hillside Crescent and then to Brougham Street. From Brougham Street turn into Basin Road and follow the street to the end where you will find the main entrance to the park.
