Belgium has a mere population of 10.5m and merely half the size of the Republic of Ireland it is hardly one of the giants in European Union and we generally know surprisingly little about the “host” of the EU. It is actually a charming place to visit and quite diverse as well, ranging from the forested Ardenne uplands in the south east with gorges and rivers to the flat landscapes in the north with canals and a total of 70 km (40 miles) of sandy beaches. All of this is spread out over the two regions of Wallonia and Flanders.
Wallonia, the southern half, is characterised by dense forests on rugged hills cut by gorges and rivers, as well as vast, flat heathlands and moors with dead birch trees sticking up like forgotten soldiers. The Ardennes dominate the southern part of Wallonia, stretching into Luxemburg. The hills can reach up to 650 m (2100 ft) in height and make for decent ski slopes during winter, provided there is enough snow. During summer this is a really nice area for hiking, mountain biking, canoeing and river rafting. Equipment is available from local agents, and the tourist information offices will provide addresses as well as trekking maps.
Once you have sufficiently explored the Ardennes landscapes, try the underground world. This area is famous for fabulous stalactite caves, some of them so enormous you should plan in a whole day to visit them, like the Han-sur-Lesse grottos. Three kilometers of eerie caves take you past the “trophy”, a stalagmite 7 m (23 ft) high and 20 m (65 ft) wide. The biggest cave is around 145 m (475 ft) high and spectacularly lit. At the end boats take you to the cave exit, making this a truly special adventure. The adjacent wildlife park is home to deer, wolves, bisons, brown bears, and lynxes.
Brussels, the capital, is often the starting point for a trip through Flanders. The major landmarks are the 102 m (335 ft) high Atomium, built for the world fair in 1985, and the only 60 cm (23 in) high bronze figure called Manneken Pis, literally Little Peeing Man. Living up to its role as the “capital of Europe” Brussels has built a miniature version of the continent. In Mini Europe you can travel from France to Russia in just a few moments and see all the major attractions in a 1:25 scale.
