The Berlin wall

A good starting point with you car hire for your tour is the former Berlin Wall that has been kept in part and today is a memorial for peace and reconciliation.  Due to the numerous paintings is has been named the “East-Side-Gallery”- A length of about 1.3km (0.8 miles) you have here, after the fall of the wall, artists from all over the world have left their mark on it.  The wall consists of a collection of political and poetic images that are today under the protection of historic buildings and monuments. Visitors can find the “East-Side Gallery” between Oberbaumbrücke and Ostbahnhof in Mühlenstraße in the district of Friedrichshain.

Discover history of Germany in the capital

The "Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas" was opened in 2005, and offers an insight into another part of the history of Germany.  On about 19.000 m² there are more than 2.700 stone pillars that were installed after being designed by the New York architect Peter Eisenman.

The Holocaust Memorial is almost like a hill formation and is more impressive than perhaps it first seems from the outside.  As soon as you enter the “concrete blocks” the memorial begins to take affect.  The wave like ground makes the rectangular stone formations seem bigger and mightier.  Visitors loose themselves in the memorial.  The anonymous, disturbing atmosphere is through the many parallel walkways increased as you cannot see round the blocks.

For further information about the Holocaust Memorial you will find it under the so called “Ort der Information”.  Here you will find in several rooms the persecution of the European Jews again portrayed and documented.  The Holocaust Memorial can be found on Cora-Berliner-Straße 1, in the district of Berlin-Mitte and can be easily reached in your car hire.

The Brandenburg Gate: Symbol of German Unity

Not far from the Memorial you will find perhaps the most well-known motif of the city.  The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most visited sights in Berlin.  Until 1989 it was situated directly on the border between East and West Berlin- today it is the symbol of German Unity.  The Brandenburg Gate was built at the end of the 18th century in the style of the Greek Acropolis.  The monumental construction was ordered by King Friedrich Wilhelm II who wanted an appropriate end to the long street- Unter den Linden.  The Gate is made from sandstone is an impressive example of German Classicism.  You will find it situated directly on Pariser Platz, in the district of Berlin-Mitte.

Hackeschen Höfe

A trip with your cheap car rental is also worth doing to Hackeschen Höfe. The colourful combination of cafés and restaurants are an attraction for many people and makes this area into perhaps one of the most lively parts of the city.  The name comes from the town major Graf von Hacke where here the Hackesche Market takes place.  The courtyards have been renovated and newly built over the years.  A courtyard was designed by August Endell that was made into a symbol of art nouveau.  The Hackesche Market with its courtyards is situated on the street of the same name- in the district of Berlin-Mitte.
