Car hire Charlottetown - a provincial capital full of culture and history

The smallest provincial capital of Canada radiates nostalgic charm with its Colonial and Victorian streets and is believed to be the birth state of Canada. In “Province House” you can still see the former court room where the unification of Canada was discussed in 1864. Charlottetown remains the cultural and political centre of the Province “Prince Edward Island”. The capital of the island is affectionately known as PEI by the Canadians and offers above all a direct connection with the mainland of Canada. The 13 kilometre (8 mile) long “Confederation Bridge” is the longest stretch of bridge in the world and offers the fastest connection between the Province “New Brunswick” and the popular seaside island PEI. Particularly during the summer high season you should definitely make sure you sort out some accommodation in advance.

Begin your tour with car hire in Charlottetown

In order to do a tour through this attractive city in your hire car, firstly you should make your way to Great George Street. There stands the symbol of Charlottetown, “St. Dunstans's Basilica”- a catholic church that was built in 1898. The yellow painted villa “Beaconsfield Historic House” was built in 1877 and belongs to one of the rich ship builders, allows the splendour of the prosperity of the Victoria times to be relived again. The tour goes through the fabulous restored living rooms and from the veranda you can see the harbour. The Georgian style parliament house “Faningbank” is still used today and in July and August the building is open to the public.

In contrast to this is the architecture of the “Confederation Centre of the Arts”. The centre consists of an art hall, a public library, a museum, 3 theatres and an open-air amphitheatre. The centre also pays homage to the author Lucy Maud Montgomery and her famous Roman figure Anne Shirley. Those of you that are avid readers of her books about the orphan girl "Anne of Green Gables" can look at the hand written notes of the author as well as the musical. From June to October the Anne-Musical is a permanent feature of the “Charlottetown Festival” which runs for a whole 2 months. In general Charlottetown is deemed to be the city of festivals. Hardly a month goes by without a dance event or a huge occasion taking place there.

Those of you that are a lover of seafood should definitely not miss the “PEI International Shellfish Festival”. For 3 days the participants compete in the preparation of vegetable and seafood dishes as well as oyster easting contests. At the “Jack Frost Children's Winter Fest” there is an impressive castle made out of ice as well as an ice sculpture competition.
