Toronto - the name has Indian roots. It means meeting place: At one time, the indigenous people, the Wyandot held their gatherings here. The times have changed but the city still remains as a meeting place. More than 4 million inhabitants live in the hinterland of the largest city in Canada- people from more than 165 countries. In the 19th century Toronto grew into a huge, colourful city. During this time there were mostly Scottish, English, Irish, Russian and German immigrants as well as Jews from America and Africans that had fled from slavery. Migrants from the 1950’s from the previous century were mostly people from the Asiatic region, the Caribbean, Latin America and Africa. With this Toronto has become what it is today: The most multicultural city in the world! No-one can escape this unique flair! Those of you that have the desire and also the appetite can choose from "Chinatown", "Little Italy", "Greek Town" and "Korean Town".
Toronto is not only the most populated city and the cultural centre of Canada- but is also the commercial and financial capital of the country. The glitzy apartment buildings and the sky-scrapers in the middle of old buildings from the early years convince us of this. The result is a fascinating and for Toronto a very specific mixture of different architectural styles. The main shopping street is Yonge Street, along this street there are also lots of restaurants, offices and shopping centres to be found. Your shopping experience definitely has no limits here! You can reach this street in your cheap car rental. Street artists also provide a unique urban flair. Those of that have a love of architecture should visit the City Hall which is situated in the city centre and can be easily reached in your cheap hire car. The city Hall was constructed by the Finnish architect Viljo Revell at the beginning of the 1960’s. Those of you that love history will be interested in the Casa Loma- a building similar to a castle that was built at the turn of the century in European style architecture. Today, the building houses an interesting museum- the Apropos museum - with 98 rooms, secret corridors, an antique swimming pool and a botanical winter garden. You will also find the most important art gallery in Canada: the “Art Gallery of Ontario” (AGO)
Classical music lovers should watch an evening performance of the "Toronto Symphony Orchestra" in the specially constructed concert hall, the “Roy Thomson Hall”. Nearby there are also further concert halls as well as a number of theatres for opera, ballet, musical comedies and plays. Or you may wish to throw yourself into the exciting nightlife Toronto has to offer.
An absolute must when visiting Toronto is a trip to the 553 metre high “CN Towers!” On the radio tower you will find a turning restaurant with a glass floor at 346 metres. The unique viewing platform, Sky Pod is situated at a staggering height of 447 metres. From here you can enjoy a truly breathtaking view of the city and the surrounding area. Picturesque Toronto is located on the north western river of Lake Ontario. With an area of 18,960 km² (7.32 square miles), Lake Ontario is the smallest of the five big lakes of North America.
With cheap car hire you can remain flexible and you can discover the surrounding area exactly how and when you want to. A few hundred kilometres north of the city you will find the Algonquin Park. Here, you will find pure nature like you find in picture books- and in the other direction, south west from Toronto you can expect to find the Niagara Falls- again easily reached with car hire.
