Welcome to Concepcion, one of the oldest city’s in Chile. Concepcion is located 500km (310 miles) south of Santiago de Chile with car hire and sits on the river Rio Biobio. You are well catered for with car hire in Concepcion as the city only has a narrow, open network of routes. Along with the neighbouring resort and harbour town of Talcahuano, Concepcion is one of the most important industrial centres of the country and its many attractions can be visited with car hire.
The city centre of Concepcion is modern and in spite of its huge size, easily accessible particularly in a car hire. On the shady Plaza Independencia you will find a comfortable place to sit. The Plaza is quiet and is surrounded by old trees- in the middle you will see a fountain with a statue of a figure being crowned. The square has this name for as good reason as this is where the independence of Chile was declared in 1818. Also located in the Plaza is the Catedral de la Santissima Concepcion. Joined to the cathedral is a small museum where religious art and priests cassocks are exhibited. Around the Plaza the streets are organised in a chequered pattern which is usual for Concepcion. When you leave the Plaza you will find the pedestrian zone of Aniba Pinto and Barros Arana, the former leads to the peaceful Parque Ecuador.
For those of you who are interested in culture should go to the south west of the park where you will find the Galeria de la Historia. In this museum the history of the city and region is colourfully presented. For example you can learn how the Manpuche-Indians once lived and who the first Spaniards were that came to Concepcion. The best view of Concepcion can be found from the hill, the Cerro Caracol that is located in the south of the Ecuador Park and can be easily reached in your rental car. If you drive in a north easterly direction in your hire car you can get to Plaza Peru where the university quarter begins. Don’t forget to visit the Pinacoteca de Concepcion where you can see the largest collection of Chilean paintings. The gallery also has the largest collection of paintings from the different Chilean Epochs.
North-West of the Plaza Peru you will find the market hall where you can find many different stands offering everything from fresh seafood to arts and crafts. On some stands you can buy excellent spices. There are also many opportunities to buy souvenirs in some of the surrounding side streets. It would make sense to undertake a trip to the surrounding area with car hire and you can use one of the two bridges to cross over the River Bio Bio to get to the suburbs of San Pedro. From here you can reach the south coast resort of Lota where you will find a nature park as well as Lebu- a resort with a beautiful beach. A little further inland you will find the resort Canete where the Castle Tucapel and the Museo Mapuche are located.
All of you that enjoy boat trips will be well advised to take a trip to Alcahuano. Along the Bahia de Concepcion and in the harbour area there are many boats worth looking at on the waters edge. Those of you who are interested in historical ships can take a trip with your hire car to the neighbouring town of Talcaluano. On the harbour you will find the battleship Huascar that was made famous by the battle of Iquique in 1879. Whatever you plan to do on your trip in conception: Enjoy it!
