Now here is a curious location for a city: tucked away on the Brunswick Peninsula close to the southernmost tip of the South American continent, Punta Arenas is thousands of miles away from the rest of civilisation. Once it was a significant stop on an important trading route, yet the city on the Magellan Straight lost importance when the Panama canal was built, making it unnecessary to navigate South America. Today Punta Arenas counts roughly 130,000 citizens, and despite (or maybe because of) its remoteness it is a popular destination for adventurers and individual tourists.
The transition from Santiago, the capital, to the Magellan Straight is nearly impossible by car, and a flight or ferry ride (from Puerto Montt) is almost inevitable, but car hire is also available from a CarDelMar office in Punta Arenas, ensuring smooth transportation all the way. Most visitors come for the absolutely stunning countryside around the city; Tierra del Fuego with its mind-blowing scenery is just across the straight and can be admired with car hire. Even though one of the world’s most spectacular natural wonders is so close, you should still take a day or two to look around the city as it does have a number of historical and cultural sights.
A tour of the city will most likely start at Plaza Munoz Gamero, a central green square with a music pavilion in the middle. The square is framed by beautiful buildings, some of which represent the architectural style of the colonial era perfectly. Palacio Jose Menendez is one of these. The bricks used in construction were delivered all the way from Montevideo in Uruguay. Another building of interest on the square is Palacio Sara Braun, dating from 1895. The heavily decorated building was once home to the richest sheep farmer in town, after the collapse of the Magellan trade route the most important industry in Punta Arenas. The Palacio is now a fine hotel and restaurant, and if you book early you can get a table in the conservatory.
The best view of town is just five blocks west of the Plaza which can be easily reached with car hire: Mirador Cerro La Cruz. From here you get a great impression of the city layout and the straight. Colourful rooftops and countless little city gardens make for a great holiday picture. Park up the hire car and take one of the most stunning photos you will ever see.
CarDelMar wishes you a pleasant journey with car hire in Punta Arenas.
