The green, fertile Corfu is the most northern and the second largest of the 7 Ionian Islands. In the middle of the 8th century BC the first Greek settlers came to the island and founded a colony, then subsequently developed the island into a prosperous location. This awoke greed: after different attempts to conquer the island- the Romans succeeded and governed there for more than 500 years. After the collapse of the Roman Empire, a number of different owners had possession of the island. Venetians, French, and the British have left their cultural mark behind. However, the island was never a part of the Ottoman Empire and the islanders are very proud of this fact.
The Venetians built several beautiful buildings that still characterise the various small towns. It is interesting to note that the inhabitants that have been wrenched from pillar to post are in between Italy and Greece- the distance to the Italian Peninsula is only a short distance away by boat. “We are not a part of Greece!” say the locals about their island with a cheeky smile and they prove this with their many different elements of Italian style that has prostrated itself in Corfu in architecture, music and language. The overall appearance of the countryside differentiates itself a little from the classic ochre coloured image that is normally seen in Greece.
Due to the short dry season- on the island dense natural environment has developed that shimmers in the blue sea of Corfu. This is why Corfu has been given the nickname of “Emerald Island.” Tourists love the many enchanting bays where the sandy beaches are bordered with palm trees, cypress trees and numerous flowering bushes. Many famous personalities had to be seen on this island of paradise. Empress Elisabeth from Austria- Sissi built a holiday home here. The German emperor Wilhelm II could not recreate what she had constructed. The author Lawrence Durrell wrote a eulogistic work about Corfu and its famous Roman “The Black Book” that is predominantly categorised as travel literature.
Corfu has many different sides to it which can be easily experienced in your car hire- next to the many scenic locations as well as locations where the nightlife begins. Particularly in and around Corfu and the cities in the surrounding area that can be easily reached in your car hire, you will find shabby beach bars and clubs in which you can turn the night into the day. When it becomes light again you can watch beautiful sun rises on the beach of Corfu as the hustle and bustle of the island starts up again. For those of you that want to experience quiet days at the beach- we recommend the north and south east beaches.
