The history of Crete

Crete has been populated since the stone -age.  Several limestone caves can be visited that served as accommodation for our stone-age ancestors. From the 3rd century BC the Minoan culture came into being, which became the first advanced civilisation on European soil.  During the gloomy reign in middle-Europe, the island of Crete was alive with civilisation and magnificent cities with palaces, temples and a functioning infrastructure. Many of these constructions are still standing today and belong to the worldwide top attractions to visit.  The palace of Knossos was the former capital of the Minoan reign- and can be visited, south of Heraklion.  What is also worthwhile visiting is the very impressive Minoan constructions of Phaestos located on the south coast of the island which can be easily reached in your car rental

Getting around by car hire on Crete

As we go on further into the tour through the old and modern Greece- your car hire will be an essential companion- the public transport on Crete is not recommendable for holiday makers.  What’s nicer than putting on your sun-glasses, feeling the warm breeze on your face as you drive alone a coastal road with a panoramic view to admire and interesting sights to discover?  There is such a large variety to see that you will probably have to do more than one trip in order to get round them all.  Afterwards you would have left a great variety of cultural achievements behind you.  Mycenaean, Doric, archaic Greek settlements as well as Roman temples, Venetian palaces along with Ottoman castles and mosques.  It is not very often that throughout the world you will find such a vast and wide variety of sights such as in Crete.

Crete is an Eden!! It is a Greek isalnd with all its advantages and big enough to get away from the crowds. The roads are empty but you need good suspension (tip for hirers). Friendly beautiful interesting and good value.

You need a satellite navigation system as the signs are poor. The roads are not great in places, so you need a car that can cope with pot holes. I would definitely recommend visiting Loutro and using a destination guide book to find other good places. Apart from a few hiccups, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

The roads in Crete were fairly good, although the Cretan driving is terrible and the quad bikes and motorbikes very dangerous. The Dictian cave in the mountains is well worth the drive.
