The first thing that you will notice in Helsinki is that the capital is a distinctly beautiful city. Helsinki is believed to be a prime example of classicism. At the beginning of the 19th century the city centre was newly designed in art nouveau style architecture and at the beginning of the 20th century it was further altered. With this came many functional buildings (“form follows function”) from the middle of the 20th century so that lovers of the new history of art will definitely get their money’s worth. For those of you that would like to find out a little more about this, the Finnish Architecture Museum is a bundle of information. Definitely visit: The Cathedral and the Senate’s Building (Classicism) and the district of Katajanokka or Eira and the National Museum (art nouveau) as well as the Finnlandia Hall or the Olympia Stadium (Functional). In the Finnlandia Hall is were the 1975 acts at Conference for Security and Cooperation in Europe were signed - the last acts that introduced the easing of the tension of the Cold War.
A visit to the Finnish National Museum that very clearly describes the history of Finland between both Scandinavian blocks (Europe) and Russia. Also exhibited there are different variations of the Puukko, a traditional Finnish knife that have been made for over a thousand years. Perhaps the ideal souvenir for someone that loves to carve or cook. The Puukko is universally versatile.
