Escape the Mass Tourism and Take a Trip to Formentera
Explore another part of Spain, discover Formentera in your car hire. The trip to Formentera is not as convenient as to other Balearic Islands, yet the reward is incredible: a small paradise of white beaches and warm hospitality surrounded by turquoise water. And escaping the mass tourism of Ibiza or Majorca is certainly worth the 30 to 45 minutes extra ferry ride. Once you reach La Savina harbour you can use your car hire to explore the tranquil little island.
Take an easy drive through San Francisco Javier with your car hire
The main town is called San Francisco Javier, drive your car hire just a few kilometers south of La Savina, a charming little place inland with a number of historic buildings, among them the old town hall, a fortified church, and what is now the ethnological museum. The pedestrianised shopping street offers plenty of opportunities to reach for your credit card or simply have a drink in the shade of a café and watch life go by. San Francisco Javier also has the only traffic regulator on the island: a roundabout. Formentera manages without a single traffic light- great when travelling in your rental car.
Don’t just stick to the west, make time to explore the eastern part of Formentera
Though most tourist infrastructure is located in the western part of Formentera do not forget to explore the eastern tip of the island, this will be made easier in your rental car. The La Mola high plateau has beautiful scenery and sports a fabulous lighthouse which is even featured in a novel by Jules Verne. During the 60s and 70s the tiny town of Pilar was a major hippie community and there are still remains of this culture to be found. At Formentera Guitars school you can take a three week class during which you will learn how to build your own electric guitar, and legendary Fonde Pepe Club is still going strong. The crafts market in town is a popular hunting ground for souvenirs.
Dive your rental car through Formentera and discover the beautiful beaches
The gorgeous weather and warm water make Formentera the perfect place for a day at the beach. The most beautiful is Playa de Ses Illetes on the northern shore, though the southern coast has its own particular charm: rugged cliffs hang over the sea, most of them included in a natural reserve. Have your camera ready for Cap de Barbaria, a medieval watchtower on a hundred metre high cliff.
Take a quick trip north in your car hire and enjoy some old fashioned tourist fun!
Should you wish to take a break from the small island tranquillity that surrounds you and participate in some old-fashioned tourist fun you should hit El Pujols in the north, a typical Balearic tourist resort with a buzzing beach promenade, lots of souvenir shops, countless restaurants with good seafood menus, and excellent nightlife- all of which can be easily reached in your car hire.
For all its beauty
Formentera is extremely popular, partially because tourism and construction have been strictly regulated. As a consequence accommodation on the island is sparse and early bookings are essential during high season.
