Car hire Formentera - discover the undiscovered

The second biggest of the Canary Islands Fuerteventura attracts countless European tourists every year, all looking for brilliant sunshine and lazy days on the beach. Just 60 miles (100 km) off the Moroccan coast the former is pretty much guaranteed whereas the latter is left to personal preferences. Whether you just want to tan in the sun, polish up your Spanish, or hit the biking trails, Fuerteventura has a lot to offer for anyone with a taste for warm weather and beautiful scenery. The mountain roads also offer a great opportunity to take your car hire for a spin.

Hot spots with Formentera car hire

Your first stop will most likely be Puerto del Rosario, the island’s biggest town. Most public life takes place on Avenida de los Reyes de Espana, the seafront promenade. Here you can mingle with the locals and sip some refreshments in the shade. Puerto del Rosario is also your best chance to check out local designer boutiques and other shops, though souvenirs are obviously available all over the island. While in town do not miss the opportunity to visit Caleta de Fustes, south of Puerto del Rosario and easily reachable by car hire. In Caleta you will find the extraordinarily well-preserved Castillo de Fustes, a defence tower resting above the bay. It does not get more scenic that this.

Get in the hire car and mingle with the locals

Leaving Puerto del Rosario take your car hire north to the charming harbor town of Corralejo. No other place in Fuerteventura is better prepared for tourists: countless bars and pubs, beach clubs and discotheques offer entertainment, and for those with manageable hangovers there are surfing and scuba diving classes during the day. Mountain bikes are also available for rent from local shops, and the countryside is quiet and beautiful, just perfect for an afternoon ride.

Car hire tour or Formentera - more splendid highlights

Continuing your clockwise tour of the island your next stop should be El Cotillo, a quaint little beach town with enormous appeal to the surfing community. If your skills on the board have not yet improved you can pass on the beach and take a walk to the Castillo de Toston, another defence tower. Not far from here to the south-east you will get to La Oliva, borrowing its name from the olive groves around it. The town is home to the Centro de Arte Canario, a big museum and art gallery complex in the Casa Mané. Canary art of all kinds is displayed, ranging from pottery and sculptures to paintings and literature. The museum shop is sure to have some precious souvenir waiting for you. For great buzz go to Jandia Playa, escaping fellow Brits is easiest done by just taking your car hire along the coastal road looking for a quiet spot. There are a few, so bring your swim suit and enjoy.
