Nature in the East
The countryside of East Germany allures with its unspoilt nature: the plains of Brandbenburg are sparsely populated. The Elbe landscapes are beautiful, in particular the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. The forests of the Erz Moutains are dreary and mystical. Particular towns worth seeing are Halle, Zwickau and Görlitz, cities destroyed in the Second World War, and are mostly untouched. It is recommended to visit the towns with the hire car, so that you are most flexible.
Leipzig conserves much of its old character. Dresden is definitely worth visiting, the ‚Elbflorenz' (Florence of the Elbe). Around the centre parts of the old town have been reconstructed remarkably.

Whoever thinks of South Germany, Munich and the Alps spring to mind: skiing in winter, hiking tours in summer, comfortable bier gardens and fairytale castles.
