Frankfurt is not generally listed among the top tourist sights in Germany, yet this resembles gross negligence as the town is actually quite interesting. Unlike with car hire in Berlin, Frankfurt is mostly known for its airport (the major international connection) and as the seat of the German stock exchange. The banking district has also made Frankfurt the only German city with a notable number of skyscrapers, giving it a modern skyline. Germans who have never been to Frankfurt will tell you it is grey and lacks charm, but this is quite bluntly not true. The city is among the greenest in the country, featuring a great number of parks and even Germany’s largest urban forest. The zoo, the palm tree garden, and other green areas are added to by an Old Town going back as far as the 1st century B.C. when the Romans first settled here.
Though small – the current population is around 667,000 – Frankfurt has contributed a lot to German culture and history. The city’s most famous son is Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, born here in 1749. A genius in many fields of science he is best remembered for his poetry, and every German student will at some point during their education have to work their way through one of his dramas as much as we have to read Macbeth or Hamlet. On Hirschgraben Street, the Goethe family estate has been turned into a museum dedicated to the brilliant writer’s life and works. This museum can be easily reached in your hired car. A historical tour of Frankfurt is best started at St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, which has had almost 1400 years to grow into the magnificent building it now is. The cathedral, simply called Dom by most, housed numerous election and crowning ceremonies for German kings and emperors during the Middle Ages.
Another sight of interest is the town square featuring the Roemer, the city hall. Built during the 14th century it serves as a beautiful backdrop for weddings at the local registry office as well as other administrative functions. Now the oldest district of Frankfurt, though formerly an independent town before incorporated into the bigger city, is Höchst west of the centre. A collection of charming medieval streets, an old fortified gate (Maintor), a castle, and the Zollturm (customs tower) make for a great day trip destination in your rental car.
In the event of rain there is still lots to do as there are a number of really good museums, mostly located along the Museumsufer (museum banks) on the Main River. Here you will find museums for film, architecture, art, and communications. This fabulous selection of culture, technology, and art is celebrated annually during the Museumsufer Festival on the last weekend in August. On Saturdays you can also stroll across a flea market on this section of the river banks or take a trip to the surrounding areas in your cheap hire car.
CarDelMar wishes you a pleasant stay with car hire in Frankfurt.
