In the Land of Gods
Greece – Land of the Gods, a country of a thousand islands and the origin of Western democracy. The country already offers many connections due to its significant history, which has been preserved to a large extent in its monuments and religious sites. Many of the images associated with the old Greek culture come to life for visitors.
Geography of the Mediterranean Sea
First of all there is the unique geography of the Mediterranean Sea. The mainland with its mountainous landscapes, the peninsula of Peloponnes with its prominent cities of Patras or Sparta, or the approximately 9840 islands in the Aegean, Ionic and Libyan Sea form the incredible scenic diversity of Greece. It is therefore not surprising that this landscape offers a vast array of recreational possibilities to the visitor. The coasts are suited for surfing, scuba-diving or sailing, and the inland is best explored by you hired car. Shorter distances can even be covered by a horse or a donkey. With its total costal line of 5,000 miles ( best discovered with your cheap car hire ! ) Greece is definitely a paradise for bathing. The best time for a visit is from springtime to autumn, when you should be prepared for high temperatures and, in part, sweltering heat.
Discover the Culture and History
Apart from the pleasant scenery, the culture and history of Greece is a definite highlight. Virtually everywhere there are ancient sites or religious buildings, sometimes even hidden between a two blocks of flats in the cities. Visitors to Athens, the capital of Greece, are greeted by the most famous landmark and greatest pride of the Greeks, the Acropolis. The entrance to this historical place is located in between the lively city districts Plaka and Monasteriki. Not far from here you can also visit the stadium, which should still be well-remembered from the Olympic Games in 2004. Athens is also well known for its intensive nightlife and bar culture – enjoy the flair of the big city and the lively ambience!
The Greek Islands
Apart from Athens, the Greek islands are an especially popular travel destination. The by far most well known ionic island is Corfu. Especially the contemplative West coast with its picturesque beaches is heaven for snorkelling enthusiasts. Crete, largest of the Greek islands, is famous for the archaeological site of Knossos, where the Minoan culture was discovered. This historic landmark with its over 3,600 years of history is a definite must for every visitor to Crete. Apart from that, the island is almost completely covered by tourism and offers everything in terms of comfort and luxury that you can imagine.
Also a popular destination, the Cyclades represent an archipelago in the heart of the Aegean. The party centre Mykonos, the contemplative island Naxos, or Santorin with its volcanic scenery – each of the Cycladic islands is worth a visit. It is wise to allow for a little more time and to explore each island by car hire to experience their individual unique features up close. It is therefore a worthwhile idea to either take along your cheap car rental on the ferry, or to place a reservation for a rented vehicle on the island: This way you can cross the islands comfortably, and you will also be able to independently explore regions still untouched by tourism.
