On your way you will encounter different pubs in which you are able to enjoy a break right beside the waters edge. For example the “Cliff” that lies on the side of the Außenalster where the “Alsterrufer” can be found.  From the “Kennedybrücke” you have a fantastic view of the setting of Hamburg as well as out towards the Binneralster and the Außenalster.  In front of the Binneralster you can already see Hamburg’s famous Rathaus- town hall in the background.  With its green copper roof it is one of the most impressive buildings in Germany, along with the Parliament Building and the Government building.  Tours of the Rathaus are offered daily every half an hour.  On the right next to the Rathaus you will find the Bucerius Kunstforum where various exhibitions are presented and famous painter’s works are exhibited.

In Hamburg’s city centre you can take an exciting stroll through the newly opened “Europa Passage” that can be found between Jungfernstieg and Mönckebergstraße.  You can also walk through the Alsterhaus which can be found directly opposite the restaurant called “Alex” on the Binnenalster.  This bar offers large electric fires that make it possible even in autumn to sit outside and enjoy the view of the Binnenalster.

Enjoy a Guided Tour, While You Cruise Along the River

You should definitely not miss out on a trip to Hamburg’s River Elbe.  You can reach it easily from the city centre in your rented car.  At the train station Landungsbrucken make sure you enjoy a harbour boat trip, listen to the rules of the harbour explained by an “actual Hamburger” – the name the Germans give to a resident of Hamburg.  Here you can catch a glimpse of Hamburg’s old Speicherstadt. (Warehouse City)  Through the Speicherstadt you can take part in a guided tour or you can go on your own initiative.  A visit to the Speicherstadt Museum is a must see- you can find out information about Hamburg’s first emigrants, the coffee and tea trade as well as much, much more.  Also in the Speicherstadt and really close to this museum you will find “Spicy’s Gewürzmuseum” (Spice Museum) where you can awaken your senses with many different types of tea.  Children can also learn about the complete process of how you turn the raw herbs and spices into the finished product with the help of antique production machines.

A Must See Religious Site!

From the Speicherstadt you can easily reach the landmark of Hamburg- St.Michaelis Church that is lovingly called Michel.  With your hire car you can reach the church when you turn off Ludwig-Erhard-Straße.  From a distance you can see the 132m high tower with the biggest church clock in Germany and its copper-green roof.  In the morning at 10 o’clock and evenings at 9 o’clock you can experience the church bells in action and listen to them tolling.       Every Friday at 21.15, in the Crypt of St. Michel it is possible to listen to a concert.  On the platform of the tower that lies at a height of 82m (in order to get there you must climb 453 steps) you can see a fantastic view of the city centre, the harbour and the district of St.Pauli – this you should definitely not miss out on.

Enjoy the Picturesque Landscapes as You Drive Around

In case you have the desire to get back in your rented car and take a trip to the Elbe- here you can take a walk through the exclusive residential area of Blankenese.  You can meander through the small, picturesque side streets situated by the Elbe beach and you enjoy a cool beer in Hamburg’s famous beach bar “Strandperle”.
