Car hire Genoa - a historical city

In Italy, Genoa is called „la Superba“ – the proud.  The city was for centuries a naval power and a financal centre of Europe.  With its magnificent palaces, Genoa is one of the most historic cities in Europe.  In recent years the charm of this old city still lives on.  The city is multi-cultural, colourful and offers a wide variety of culture to be enjoyed.

Enjoy the multicultural atmosphere with car hire Genoa

The location of this 680,000 inhabitant city is unique.  It is best reached in a hire car.  On foot it is reached by steep sloping hillsides of the Ligurian Alps that are practically cut out from the hinterland.  In the past, these as well as the huge harbour encouraged the influx of other cultures that the numerous immigrants brought with them.  Today, the city has more in common with its far away harbour cities in the Mediterranean region compared with those only a few miles away in the mountainous hinterland.  The old town is for example dominated by North African immigrants.  In the evenings and at weekends the small narrow streets come alive with a colourful, bright multicultural atmosphere.

Also in regard to architecture the old town couldn’t be more impressive.  The facades of the maze-like streets stretch as high as 7 stories into the sky although there are not so many of these that still remain.  Often there is no more than a metre space in-between the houses.  Nearby there are the grand buildings of the nobles with the remains of beautiful wall paintings and powerful portals right next to humble residential dwellings.  One of the main attractions is the Palazzo Ducale from the 13th century- the former headquarters of the Genoese Dogen.  The little narrow streets more often than not open up into small squares with huge, richly decorated churches.  Sometimes in a strong Gothic style then in ornate Baroque style.

Shopping, culture and history - hobbies in Genoa!

An amazing display of Baroque achievement can be found the 17th century Via Garibaldi.  The amount of beautiful houses with their splendour and wealth seem unique.  You will also find here the two ofth  most important museums in the city, the "Palazzo Rosso" and the "Palazzo Bianco".  Splendid palaces, fascinating inner courtyards and gardens can also be admired.  The Via XX Settembre is an elegant shopping street and the main shopping centre of Genoa.  The promenade is called Corso Italia.  A symbol of the city is the 117m high lantern.  In the lighthouse that is located in the west of the old harbour you will find a museum.  The harbour was completely modified to mark the event of the Columbus celebrations as well as the opening of the exhibition in 1992 by the star architect Renzo Piano.

Enjoy both art and food easily with car hire in Genoa

A tourist magnet is the gigantic Aquarium- one of the biggest in Europe.  A visit is definitely worth it as well as the fact it offers a wonderful view of the whole of the city.  The cultural attractions of the city have not been missed- Genoa was given the title of Capital of Culture in Europe in 2004.  With this title only the opera, the Symphony Orchestra, the Theatre and the   Varieté were mentioned.  Places where events are held are the Carlo Felice- Theatres, the Teatro di Genova, the Politeama Genovese, the Tosse-Theatre and the Archivolto-Theatre.  Insiders Tip: The pubs in the old town are where music, cabaret and events are held.  Here, art and gastronomy make a fascinating combination.
