Car hire Livorno - a city with incomparable charm

Steep coastlines, sandy beaches and pine trees- on the west coast of Italy, about 40km (25 miles) away from Pisa the second largest city in Tuscany is located- Livorno.  The beauty and charm of Livorno cannot be compared to other Italian cities, so it’s well worth making a trip there.  Livorno is at the centre of all ferry connections to Sardinia, Corsica and also the ferry connection to Africa. From the city on the Etruscan Riviera it’s worthwhile to take a trip to Pisa or to the beaches.  The most impressive feature of this city with 160,000 inhabitants is the harbour.  The harbour obtained this meaning in the 16th century and also accelerated the expansion of the city.

Experience shopping like never before in Livorno with car hire

Just as you can do in so many cities in Italy, you can stroll through the city in peace and quiet and maybe order a coffee or an espresso in one of the many bars and cafes.  For those of you that like to stroll or walk we recommend the Mercato Centrale- a charming market hall in the style of Classicism.  In front of the market hall in good weather you will find a flea-market of a particular kind:  Every nook and cranny of these tiny streets are used by the traders in order to sell their wares.  The excitement and the haggling send the visitors into another world.  It’s worthwhile to buy an article or two and above all- to haggle for them!  Then at the end of the negotiating you will feel happy that you got a good value for money yellowing Italian book or a certain “beautiful” vase.  After that, wander onto the next corner and be greeted again by a salesman with that Italian charm and those negotiating skills- the experience is definitely worth it!

Take an interesting drive through Livorno with car hire

For those of that have negotiated enough and have drank enough coffee you can confidently made your way south on the Via Aurelia in your hired car - where there are definitely a few beautiful places to take a break. Whether it’s the seaside resort of Castiglioncello with its time honoured coastal watch tower or the coast of Marina di Cecina lined with pine forests and the quiet resort of Casale Matittimo- the lust for life, happiness and the lively temperament of the Italians has a fascinating affect on visitors.  Speaking of temperament- also in traffic you can see how different the Italians are in the north and central Europe.  They seem to drive how they like, traffic signs just seem to be a suggestion to the many drivers and is often for a non -practiced driver difficult to understand and very chaotic.  Above all in large cities it would make more sense to drive a little further on and park the hired car in one surrounding areas.

Livorno - a destination worth seeing

What is definitely worth seeing on a journey along the coast towards the south is the Rosignano Marittimo:  Here you are directly on the top of the old town.  The Museo Civico is small but very interesting with an exhibition of many different historical findings on show.  A part of the collection include Etruscan findings and this is the reason why the coast is known as the “Etruscan Riviera.” In order to see Elba you have to go to Populonia, the stronghold of the city.  After a climb up the steep wooden steps you can see across to the island.  Another interesting fact about this city is that as far as we know it was the only Etruscan City on the sea.
