Parma lies in the region of Emilia-Romagna and is a culinary stronghold, not only is the famous ham and parmesan cheese produced here but it’s also where the headquarters of the pasta brand- Barilla is located. The city considers itself as a „Little Paris“ as many of the residents spend time in the cafes on the edge of the streets and in the Piazzas in order to have a light snack or an aperitif. Sights not to miss with car hire in Parma

The Roman Cathedral was built in the middle-ages and is furnished with magnificent frescoes from the painter Correggio.  The baptistery radiates light with its pink-white marble and its octagonal layout.  The wonderful reliefs on the facades and in the interior room are by the successful medieval sculptor, Benedetto Antelami.    

The Palazzo della Pilotta is definitely worth a visit.  A palace that remains uncompleted today now houses 2 museums and the Farnese Theatre.  The palace gets its name from the ball game, pelota that was very popular in the past in Parma.  The Farnese Theatre is a historic theatre from the year 1618 and has been completely constructed from wood.  In the courtyard families can find splendid theatre performances.  There were moveable backgrounds and for naval battles the stage was put under water. 

The Galleria Nazionale, The National Gallery presents a collection of paintings from the 13th to the 18th century.  Here, hang works from Leonardo da Vinci, Tintoretto, Van Dyck and Correggio.  Furthermore in the Palazzo della Pilotta were the Archeological Museum is situated is definitely worth seeing.  Famous musicians were at home in Parma including Giuseppe Verdi, Paganini and Dirigent Arturo Toscanini whose birth place, the Casa Toscanini can be visited.  Here, you can find many documents such as letters, pictures and artefacts from the Toscanini family.

You can certainly relax in the Parco Ducale! The garden of the Ducal Palace resembles an English country park and is decorated with statues and fountains.  You will find sports fields as well as plays and concerts there. Worth seeing is the Benedictine Monastery San Polo from the middle-ages.  The interior rooms can be visited.  The Camera di Correggio, the dining hall of the former monks has been painted with ancient scenes by Correggio.  

For those of you that wish to learn more about the famous Parma ham, it is best for you to get in your hired car and drive  to the surrounding areas of Parma as in the hills there are many manufacturing facilities that also offer samples.  In Parma during September you will find the Festival of Parma Ham – guided tours and free samples are offered as well as exhibitions, seminars are held and the wine of the region is sampled- One not too miss!  In October you will find the Verdi-Festival there.  At the theatres- concerts, operas, and plays are performed as well as dance, prose, jazz and visual arts dedicated to the works of composers
