Reggio Calabria’s turbulent history includes growth, prosperity, conquests, downfall, devastation and reconstruction. Due to the fact that it is situated in a strategically advantageous position, the Greek city began as “Rhegion” after it’s formation in the year 720BC- after a short time it became very prosperous. After fierce clashes with the tyrants in the 4th century BC, the city was razed to the ground. It was only in 264BC under Roman command that the city regained some of its splendour. Later Reggio was a Byzantine city and in the 12th century was a part of the realm of Sicily and in the 13th century the realm of Naples. In the 16th century it was plundered by the Ottoman Turks. Finally, in December 1908 due to an earthquake as well as a Tsunami, Reggio was completely devastated.
Visitors to Reggio Calabria can get to the bottom of this varied history in two ways. A possibility is open to you to take a trip of architectural discovery through the attractive old town. An impressive example is the cathedral. The remains of the gothic cathedral that was destroyed during the earthquake was decorated with a magnificent neo-Roman- Byzantine façade. Achievements from the earlier epochs are the city castle from the 15th century, the remains of the Greek city wall from the 4th century BC as well as the Roman thermal baths with their floor mosaics. The other opportunity to get to the bottom of Reggio’s history is to visit some of the numerous museums. Particularly impressive is the Museum Magna Graecia that exhibits Roman and Greek relics. Beneath it you will find the world famous bronze of Riace that was declared a World Heritage by UNESCO.
The city doesn’t just offer history, art and culture. It is above all an pleasure and seaside resort. The beaches in the city are seldom considered to belong to the most beautiful beaches in Italy. A beach of a special type is the Lido Zerbi. From here you can enjoy not only an impressive panoramic view of the city but there are also lots more different events and excursions to do and see. After sunset Reggio di Calabria is renowned for its colourful and lively nightlife.
The regional cuisine signals the lively taste and the intensive smell from Magna Draecia, Africa and the Middle East. The colour red is extremely characteristic: red pepper, tomatoes, red wine, paprika and red onion. Fish also features in their culinary specialities: swordfish, sole and marinated white fish are some of the most delicious examples.
