The beautiful city of Vicenza is located about half way between Verona and Padua, in sight of the majestic Alps- perfect for lovers of the arts and cultures. The rich Italian Renaissance has built a unique townscape particularly the famous architect Andrea Palladio. Palladio said that his work would make Vicenza into a legendary tourist destination. With success the UNESCO declared Vicenza a Cultural Heritage.
After a short walk about you will be amazed by the splendid architecture that is showed off well against the continuous blue skies. It is best to start with the main square- the Piazza dei Signori with its pretty palaces designed by Palladio that you just simply come across. All around you will see Renaissance facades, fountains and stone masonry. You can wander over old stone bridges and pass old churches and Piazzas. For those of you that know of Corso Andrea Palladio, the architect is completely responsible for appearance of Vicenza. Palladio’s main work is located a little out of town but it can be easily reached in a hired car- the impressive Villa Rotonda: it will remind you a little of the Roman Pantheon.
Further on you can go to the San Lorenzo und Santa Coreona churches. Santa Coreona has beautiful paintings inside but what is extraordinary is definitely the remarkable jump from Gothic Style to Renaissance style that you can clearly see here. There is more magnificent art in the Museo Civico with many paintings from the Venetian school with masters such as Tintoretto, Veronese and Van Dyck. Particularly worth seeing is the ceiling Fresco by Brusazori in the entrance hall.
After so much art and culture it would be nice to sit with friends in a street café or restaurant. A typical city refreshment is Baccalà, a stockfish with all sorts of vegetables with which the locals drink fruity white wine or Prosecco. By the way the wine growing area of Soave is just outside of Vicenza!
You should certainly have a typical Italian espresso as there are still many attractions to see on the way in this unique cultural region. A stone’s throw away in your rental car you will arrive in Padua- the oldest university city where the scholars have discussed all manner of subjects. Some famous buildings that should definitely be visited: The Basilica of San Antonio with its tombstone is a church of pilgrimage- the huge Platz Prato della Valla is definitely the biggest square in Europe with many Renaissance works. Just opposite you will find the Basilica of San Giustina with the tombstone of San Luke. The most important sight in Padua is the Cappella degli Scrovegni with the revolutionary perspective frescoes of Giotto. Well worth seeing!
Maybe its now time to leave art behind and relax a little. South from Padua, about 20 minutes away in your hired car you will find the volcanic hills Euganeen- here there are many thermal baths where you can relax. The Romans came here too. Vicenza is also not too far away from Lake Garda- approximately one hour in your hired car and there is a huge holiday resort that you can reach on foot. Those of you looking for some relaxation can spend a whole summer holiday here taking part in the various sports and other activities. The region around Vicenza, Verona and Padua offers a great opportunity to go for a spin around all the fascinating sights.
