A long time ago according to legend, the Nymph Calypso that lived on a small island in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea bewitched a young warrior called Odysseus, so much that he remained her “prisoner of love” for a whole 7 years.
This island is called Gozo and until today remains one of the most beautiful natural paradises in the south of Europe. For those of you that like the legendary story of Odysseus and Calypso, Gozo is said to have preserved some of this unique magic and anyone that steps on the island is said to be immediately enchanted. For those of you that know Malta will find that its sister island Gozo is not to be compared to Eiland with its population of 31,000. While tourism is already left its mark on Malta, Gozo has managed to turn its back on the stressful hustle and bustle of the crowds of tourists. What visitors will find here above all is peace and relaxation.
Among other things the picturesque nature of Gozo is responsible for this. Above all in the spring months, before the sun shines relentlessly on the ground, you will see the island from its green side. Cacti and lemons, palms and olives, medlar and almonds provide the image of the island. It is really worth it to go on a long walk or to hire a bike in order to discover the island in all its glory- you can even discover it in your hired car. On your rental car trips you will find that Gozo is very agrarian oriented and fishing is also important. The people of Gozo more or less look after themselves through self- building and are relatively independent from their larger neighbouring island of Malta.
Furthermore, the island has some ideal places for diving, for example at “The Blue Hole” or “Fungus Rock”. The crystal clear water and the abundant sea-life makes this activity an especially amazing experience. In addition to this the “Azure Window” is also worth a look. The Azure Window is a naturally made window in the rocks and is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island. The most beautiful beach on the island is by far Ramla Bay that is characterised by its red sand that can be easily seen from a distance. Of course there is plenty of nature to be discovered on Gozo in your hired car.
Visit the main city, Rabat which was formally called Victoria and enjoy a coffee in the main square and observe the goings on of the locals. The two baroque churches, the Cathedral Santa Marija and the Basilica San Gorg are definitely worth a visit as well an exploration of the famous Citadel. From here you can get the best view of not only Gozo, but also the neighbouring islands of Malta and Comino. A further highlight to be discovered on the island is the ancient ruins of the Ggantija Temple that relates to more than 7000 years of Maltese history.
For those of you that wish to have a more animated narration should not shy away from making contact with the locals. Simply drive from village to village in your rental car and you will soon get to know Gozo from a completely different perspective. You will gain totally different experiences and you will get to know the present day life of the population in an authentic way. Apart from that on your travels, you will also have the chance to discover all the culinary delights that you may not be able to find in for example, Rabat.
On Gozo is seems as though time stands still. An ideal location to find peace and relaxation, away from the streams of tourists and away from the everyday stresses and strains of life. When you visit the Grotto of Calypso, spare a thought for the legend of the love stricken nymph and her helpless captor.
