Car hire in Tsumeb: luscious and green

Thanks to relatively high rainfall, hundreds of Jacaranda trees bloom in the town of Tsumeb.   Tsumeb is situated in the north of Namibia and is an area where a lot of agriculture is carried out.  Mining is also one of the most important economic sectors in Tsumeb. The aborigines had already found dense deposits of copper ore under the Earth’s surface and put this to good use.  These days there are only a few mines in operation and in the local history museum you can find out about the 217 minerals and crystals that are present in this area.  The museum can also be easily reached in your hired car.

Discover nature's wonders in Tsumeb with car hire ease

In the south easterly town of Grootfontein the spring brings with it beautiful blossoms.  In the terrain around the nearby Hoba-Farm you can find the biggest meteorite to be found on Earth.  The giant meteorite measures 3m across and has been there since it hit over 80,000 years ago. When you travel north-west from Grootfontein in your hired car on the A-Road 8 you will find yourself in one of the greenest parts of Namibia: the Caprivi Strip.  The town Rundu in Okawango is often the last place where you can fill up your rental car with petrol and do any shopping before you reach the most water rich part of this country.  There are three large and several small rivers that originate from the neighbouring country of Angola.  Due to the fact that these rivers flow throughout the whole year means rich vegetation and a large variety of animal species can be found here.  In several of the reserves live elephants, giraffes, antelopes, and zebras.  Next to the reserves are the Popa Falls, 200km east from Rundu- this is a huge tourist magnet- aside from the fantastic amount of nature to be found, you can also admire the numerous water rapids.

More amazing animals to see in Tsumeb from your hire car

When you travel from Tsumeb in a north westerly direction you will reach the Etosha National Park- a visit here should most definitely be on your list of places to see whilst holidaying in Namibia.  In the centre you will find a salt flat.  Several years ago there was a huge lake that was fed by a river that dried up.  Today there are several water holes in the southern part and only in the wet season some waterholes can be found in the north.  These water reserves ensure survival for the wildlife.  In Etosha Park you are sure to come across the „Big Five“ – elephants, rhinoceros, buffalo, lions and leopards.  Huge herds are drawn from the scrubland, the grassland, the savannah, and the dry forests.  For those of you who would like to find out more about the diversity of this national park, you should definitely take lodgings for a few days in one of the 3 camps.

Explore with the help of a guide in Tsumeb

The North of the Etosha National Park extends into the Kaokoland.  This is an area that is not accessible in the Namibia region.  Only with a guide and a Land Rover should the area be visited.  Here live the Himbas, a population of semi-nomadic herdsmen that have been here for hundreds of years.  On the Kunene River, the border river between Namibia and Angola the Himbas have established a camp surrounded by further grass savannah and ranges.  When taking a bath they must certainly keep an eye out for crocodiles!

South from Tsumeb the Waterberg juts out.  The mountain is about 200m high, 200km wide and 50km long.  Around the mountain a National Park was established in order to protect the antelope.  Thanks to successful resettlement, today there are also many other rare animals here- altogether around 90 mammals and over 200 different types of birds.  Also a large number of snakes can be found.  50km west of the huge mountain visitors can visit a crocodile farm on the eastern outskirts of Otjiwarongo and watch how crocodiles are bred and reared
