Auckland- The City of Sails

White sales flutter in the wind in the bays in front of Auckland:  In the largest city in New Zealand- almost everyone has a sailing boat.  The sea is relatively calm and a steady wind blows across the land.

In the north of New Zealand, Auckland stretches out 50km (31 miles) onto a narrow spit of land.  Over 50 extinct volcanoes form the landscape and separate 2 harbours from each other:  Waitemata on the Pacific in the east and Manukau on the Tasman Sea in the west.  Every half an hour from Waitemata you will find sailing boats and catamarans moored up on the islands.  Just a stones throw from the mainland that you can reach in a kayak under your own steam, you will find Rangitoto Island with its volcano of the same name.  From here out you can enjoy a fantastic view over the bay and Auckland.  If you find the walk on foot too strenuous, you can travel in an open buggy of a tractor and make your way up to the top.

Enjoy Auckland with your hire car

A little further you can swim on and around lots of little islands as well as snorkel, relax on secluded beaches and enjoy good, New Zealand wine.  A definitely must is a visit to the wildlife reserve on Tiritiri Matangi Island.  Just nearly fresh water streams flow through green landscapes and offer thousands of water birds a place to live.  On Kawau Island there is a huge historic mansion that attracts visitors with its wallabys and kangaroos.

On the mainland, those of you that love the sun, gourmet food or those of you that love active holidays will definitely get your monies worth.  On the east Pacific coast, the sand on the beaches is soft and white- in the west on the Tasman Sea, the black beaches come from a volcanic origin.  A great opportunity to combine wine, nature and culture is a trip to the Clevedon Valley located close by.  Here, visitors will find well cared for gardens, exceptional wines and small galleries.

In Auckalnd itself you will find the Aotea Centre, the Town Hall, the Auckland City Gallery and the Auckland Memorial Museum which are all worthwhile seeing and can be easily reached in your car hire.  The latter displays amongst other things an impressive collection of the history and culture of the Maoris.

Kelly Tarlton’s Antarctic Encounter & Underwater World is situated east of the city centre- a huge aquarium in which as well as an exhibition dedicated to the theme of the Antarctic.  In the city zoo there are many exotic birds from all over the world to see.  In a huge walk in aviary, the birds can fly past, quite close to your head!

In order to get an overview of the city and its surrounding area there is the Sky Tower which can be easily reached in your car hire.  With its 328 metres, it is the tallest building in the southern hemisphere.  The free alternative for a panoramic view are the volcanic mountains of Mount Eden and One Tree Hill.  When the weather is nice, the best way to enjoy the city is to have a picnic.

The most beautiful pathway in Auckland is the unique Coast to Coast Walkway where you can walk from one coast to the other- enjoying the beautiful landscapes of each region.  Those of you that are not too keen on walking and would prefer to discover the area a little more actively can visit the several golf courses or race over along the dirt tracks in a Land Rover or a motorbike.
West of Auckland the Centennial Memorial Park stretches out, a part of the Waitakere Range which can be easily reached in your car hire.  In the park there are numerous pathways that cross the New Zealand bushlands that once could be found all over the island.
