Oman is a monarchy and the Sultan is both head of state and head of government. The Ministers are appointed by the Sultan and only have an advisory function. The country also has an abundance of oil and gas reserves. The largest oil reserves are located mainly in the interior of the country in the deserts. The Gulf of Oman is on Muscat's doorstep. Thus, Muscat is also a major exporting port for crude oil. Moreover, it is also along the Persian Gulf and therefore of great strategic importance to the rest of the world.
