As well as the scenic beauty, the city has a lot to offer in the area of culture, which can be easily experienced with cheap car hire in Porto. In 2001, Porto was the European Capital of Culture and has maintained its reputation until today. Ribeira, the historical old town in Porto, is particularly responsible for this. Ribeira was declared a World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO in 1996 and invites visitors to discover the houses, narrow streets and delightful places in the suburbs. Although, if you are in the region of Porto, we recommend that you do this tour on foot as walking will be a lot less stressful due to the fact that the roads are often closed. The payment method for using the motorways it’s a complete shambles, you can not pay on the same day, you have to wait 72 hours and you can only pay in a Portuguese Post Office, goes without saying that I had no way of paying for the last day as I was returning to the UK. I asked the agent if he could make the payment on my behalf but he refused, saying that Thrifty will pass the details of the driver to the authorities and I could face a 25 euros fine…I will like to see them trying. If that is their way of promoting tourist to visit the country they are not doing a very good job.
