Discover 'the Boot' that is Sicily with car hire!

The big island that at school you were told looked like a football that “the boot” of mainland Italy was trying to kick, that’s Sicily, and even though it’s not really shaped like a football, its idiosyncrasies and quirks makes it refreshingly different to the rest of the country. Sure Sicily is famous for its mafia families, its food and its volcanic mountain, but those who do bother to venture here will find so much more. The countryside is simply stunning, there is no other word for it, and dotted here and there one can find a real gem of a town.

Where to go on Sicily with a hire car

Sicily is a perfect choice for a motoring holiday, the road network is excellent and distances are never that great. Palermo, the island’s capital should not be missed of course, and offers superb opportunities to sample local culture whether that take a culinary or architectural form. From Palermo we recommend heading south and east in your rental car, first stop the gorgeous Taormina, a popular tourist destination but still one that is worth a visit. Of particular interest is the town balcony overlooking the azure Mediterranean waters, and the ancient remains of the Roman amphitheatre, with a similarly spectacular view. But turn your head to the right away from the sparkling water for a moment and you’ll see the horizon dominated by the smoking snow-capped peak of Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano. Keep heading south in your car hire and you won’t be able to get away from Etna until it slowly starts to fill your windscreen, but that’s a god thing, because climbing Etna is an experience in itself. For the less fit, or adventurous, a fair part of the mountain’s height can be conquered by road, but for those truly in search of a unique experience as well as a souvenir pumice put your walking boots on.

Festivals and cultural events in Sicily to see with the aid of car hire

Culture-wise Sicily makes an excellent destination, the island abounds with attractions based on a literary theme, celebrating the works of Salvatore Quasimodo, Leonardo Sciascia, and Andrea Camilleri. At the right time of year, whilst in Taormina, check out the Arte festival, a popular folk festival, and any number of the numerous other festivals and folk events that take place throughout the year. With such a range of scenery, cultural events and amazing dining possibilities, make Sicily your destination of choice.
