A rumble can be heard from far away that slowly approaches nearer and finally becomes the rattle of a steam train. The Outeniqua Choo Choo appears huffing and puffing from the thick forest and travels further along the famous arched bridge that runs over the River Kaaimans. The view is breath-taking: On one side of the quiet river are green hillsides and on the other side the waves of the Indian Ocean and steep cliffs. On your way from George to Knysna on the South African Garden Route, the almost 80 year old light railway has travelled along white beaches, fern covered mountains, clear river courses and lagoons. The journey takes about 2 and a half hours.
George is situated approximately 20km (12 miles) off the coast. The small city looks like a city from a storybook. The residential houses, hotels and public buildings lie nestled in a garden that looks similar to a park and above all the Outeniqua Mountains rise up in the background. The area of Western Cape is particularly popular for golf. Two of the best golf courses as well as three further courses can be found in George. The Fancourt Golf Estate is world famous. Here, next to the 18-hole course, there is also a golf school, an exclusive hotel, several restaurants and a congress centre. When taking a walk through George you should definitely not miss out on looking at some of the churches and the Railway Museum- all of which can be easily reached in your car hire.
40km (25 miles) south west of George you will find Mossel Bay off the motorway N2- a popular destination for those of you that love beach holidays. The perfect wind and water tumbles down from the cliffs onto the rugged shore - “The Point” huge wave peaks that spray many metres high. For those of you that are brave enough to plunge into the tumbling waves from the steep cliffs will definitely experience an amazing feeling.
Oudtshoorn is situated north of George. Those of you that are driving in your car hire should drive along the area of the Montagu Pass. The pass was the first safe way though the Outeniqua mountains to Oudtshoorn and was constructed in the middle of the 19th century. The journey to Oudtshoorn takes about 3 hours instead of 3 days. On good secure roads the journey takes you through the breath-taking fantastic green mountain landscape. Oudtshoorn itself is a sleepy mountain village. The highlight to be found in this village is in fact the 2 ostrich farms that attract coach loads of tourists on a daily basis. After a guided tour of one of the farms, visitors are allowed to ride one of these long-necked birds and can take part in an ostrich race. You can also admire some of the ostrich palaces- the magnificent residences of former traders that earned a fortune from the exporting of ostrich feathers before the First World War. Near to Oudtshoorn you will come across the biggest limestone caves with stalactites and stalagmites in the world: The Cango Caves. The ancient stalactites and stalagmites are in part illuminated with colourful lights. You can spend hours exploring the huge cave system.
The city of Wilderness is located east of George. Those of you that would rather carry on without your car hire along the N2 motorway or the Outeniqua Choo Choo, should travel along the Seven Pass Road. The path is made of loose gravel and asphalt and leads through woods, over passes and bridges and through deep gorges. Due to the fact the road is seldom used by transport, as after rainfall, the gravelled parts cannot be or are difficult to drive along in a car hire.
