Modern glass and concrete structures stand opposite old houses from the gold digging times. Old established Chinese and Indian tradesmen share the shopping districts with new shops and in the museums traditional African culture meets modern art. As in most of the large cities of South Africa- past and present can also be found close together in Johannesburg. With approximately 3.3 million inhabitants, the city in the north of South Africa is the biggest in the country which is not always the case of a capital.
You can get the perfect view of the city centre fort he highest building in Africa: the Carton Centre measures 220 metres and is one of the biggest shopping centres of the city. On the 50th floor, at about 202 metres high, you will find a terrace next to a bar and restaurant where you will be able to enjoy a fantastic panoramic view over the whole of Johannesburg. The building that houses the stock exchange is similar to the shape and surface of a diamond. On weekdays guided tours are offered whereby the visitors can observe the brokers trading and can be easily reached in your car hire.
In one of the old market halls, you can experience a lot of the culture all at once: On five stages classical and experimental theatrical plays are performed. There is also a gallery, the Africa-museum, a restaurant and a bar. Those of you that are bargain-hunters can go to the flea-market located outside the theatre in order to rummage for some samples of art. You can also enjoy a unique shopping experience in the African Herbalist Shop: grasses, herbs, bones and snake fat are offered here for these magical or healing properties that originate from the Zulus.
North-west from Johannesburg which can be easily reached in your car hire, you will find the so-called cradle of humanity: in the cave system several human skeletons and fossils were found, among others, the Taung Child- the first fossil of a prehistoric man to be found in Africa. You can travel further along the N1 in a northerly direction to find the city of Pretoria. In 2005, the city was awarded the LivCom award in category E (city with more than 750,000 inhabitants) and now counts as the city that is most worthy to live in, in the whole world. The city appears particularly worthy with its many magnificent buildings from the 19th century in October: as in the southern hemisphere, the seasons are opposite to those in the northern hemisphere- in October spring begins and hundreds of Jacaranda trees begin to bloom and cover the streets in a colourful violet sea of flowers.
