As the times have changed, Karl Marx would certainly be astounded with how Manchester looks today- the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution has developed into a glittering city and cultural hot-spot. Architecture, museums, famous bands and films shape the city of Manchester into a city of culture as well as a little more demanding and rebellious than anywhere else. Young, lively and fresh goes without saying, for those of you have never visited Manchester will come across a city that is innovative and modern, however it has not forgotten its old roots.
The name Manchester is a compound of the Celtic meaning for hill and the Roman word for camp (caestrum-Chester). Since the Roman times Manchester remained only as a market town of no real significance up until the 18th and 19th century before the Industrial Revolution broke out and brought about radical changes for country and people. Huge factories were erected and the population grew many times over- suddenly Manchester was the most important industrial city in the world.
Many of the old, wild romantic industrial sites have been kept as memorials- well worth seeing are the old quays “the quays”, west of the city centre and have been newly renovated. The modern architecture makes for a fantastic contrast to the old constructions. You have to visit the Imperial War Museum North designed by Daniel Libeskind which can be easily reached in your car hire. The shattered globe is a statement against the horror of the war. Inside there are numerous exhibits and different war theatres that highlight the consequences of war.
After such a heavy subject you should walk a little along the quays and take a trip to the Lowry. The Lowry is an art and entertainment centre with numerous bars and cafes as well as a theatre and art galleries. Above all, the works of the artist Stephen Lowry are displayed after whom the centre was named after.
As many already know- Manchester is a football city. Manchester United- the most famous club in the city has a museum dedicated to the club that can be found on the quays, again easily reached in your car hire. Of course, you can also go and visit Old Trafford and perhaps watch a match with the “Red Devils” After such a football celebration, one should relax and take a stroll through the city and visit a few of the many bars and clubs- often you will stumble across some great Live Bands as Manchester is the city of bands such as Oasis, The Smiths, Happy Mondays and many others. A night out here is definitely a must!
The morning after, in spite of the hangover, the variety of shopping opportunities cannot be missed. On King Street you will find many Boutiques, in the Northern Quarter you will come across the alternative Scene with young, independent designers that offer their clothes for sale at very reasonable prices.
If you take a stroll through the city you should take a look at the town hall- Manchester Town Hall has a beautiful neo-gothic façade in which you will find a couple of painting exhibitions. Right opposite you will find the G-Mex centre- an old industrial monument that was originally a rusty 19th century train station and now has been developed into a hypo-modern entertainment centre.
If you would like to experience more of the city developments- take a wander along Liverpool Road in the direction of the canal where you will find the Museum of Science and Industry- were every possible industrial achievement have been documented. Definitely very interesting and a “Must See” in this city. Book your car hire and visit the surrounding areas!
