Another opportunity for a day trip is the historically important “Hohensyburg”- together with the fortified church of St. Peter of Syburg- is a further very attractive historical monument that is situated on the Ardey Mountains and can be easily reached in your car hire. The fortified church originates from the year 1100 and the Hohensyburg is even older. There are further constructions such as the “Hörder” castle from the 12th century that above all during the war in the 1930’s had a volatile and warlike existence, however is still an attractive and popular tourist attraction. Next to these constructions in close proximity to Dortmund there are also many buildings within the city of Dortmund that are well worth seeing. For example, the Old Market forms the historical centre of the city where at one time the craftsmen and tradesmen would line up. Unfortunately the Old Town Hall was destroyed in the most part during the second world war- it once belonged to one of the oldest town halls in Germany. However, to this day the market has a pleasant atmosphere and you will also regularly find city festivals and events taking place here.
Take in some modern art in Dortmund
For those of you that are interested in art, you should definitely visit the art gallery that specialises in modern and contemporary art. Since 1983, it has been independently organised and managed by artists and has been used for experimental art too. You will find the art house in the north of the city of Dortmund in a former factory building in the mining area of Westphalia. At the same time you can also take a look at the coal mine that will most certainly provide an exciting insight into the history of coal mining- and can be easily reached in your car hire. We also recommend that you visit the museums in the city- in particular the museum on the east wall that was founded in 1947 and exhibits different paintings, pictures and sculptures from the modern era. The attractive collection comprises of contemporary and modern art and houses the largest collection in Germany of the works of artist and painter Andrej von Jawlensky. There is also some attractive art photography from the 20th century displayed here.
