The symbol of the city is the Großmünster, a cathedral on a branch of the River Limmat. Both the towers are an essential feature of the silhouette of the city. The Evangelical Reformist Church is situated in the old town of Zurich and was constructed at the beginning of the 12th century. The patron saints are Felix and Regula as well as Exuperantius. Inside the church there is a museum that is well worthwhile seeing, however is only open during the week. The Großmünster is situated in the square which shares the same name- the Großmünster Square - and can be easily reached in your car hire via Limmat-Quai Street. Limmat-Quai Street runs off the Rämi street- one of the main streets in the city.
There are a further two churches in Zürich that are also worth visiting. One is St. Peter’s church and the other is the Fraumünster. The Fraumünster was built in the middle of the 9th century- some of the relics come from the tomb of Felix and Regula- the churches patron saints of Großmünster. The Fraumünster once had two towers, one was demolished at the beginning of the 18th century that was built to actually replace the first.
St. Peters church is famous above all for its huge tower clock face. With its diameter of 8.7 metres, it is the largest in Europe. In addition, the church with its Baroque nave from the 1706 is an attraction worthwhile visiting- it also belongs to one of the main sights of Zürich. St. Peters church is located in St. Peterhofstatt and the Fraumünster is located on Münsterhofplatz. All three churches are situated reasonably close to one another and are all easily reached in your car hire.
For those of you that are interested in art, you will find a number of good opportunities to get you art fix. The Art House in Zürich belongs to one of the most recognised museums in Europe. The museum has a varied collection of different arts from paintings and drawings to photography and sculptures. Those of you that would like to see a real Picasso, Beckmann or Monet just once- you are in the right place! A highlight of the museum is its huge collection of the works of Munch outside of Norway. The museum was opened in 1910. It’s situated in the centre of Zürich near to Lake Zürich. You can reach the museum in your car hire follow Rämi Street in the direction of Lake Zürich and then turn into Heimplatz Street. The first building complex on the corner with the number 1 is the Art House, Zürich.
Zürich is not just a city that offers a completely unique experience. In the surrounding area you will find many other attractions that are definitely worth a trip. The main sights can be easily reached within an hour either in your own car or in your car hire- this will give you the opportunity to go on a few day trips.
For example, a wonderful destination is the Rheinfall. The Rheinfall is the largest waterfall in Europe. Over a width of approximately 150m the huge mass of water gushes over the edge. The 23m fall of the water is just as impressive- as the mass of 700 square metres of water per second to the normal water level. The amazing spectacle can be viewed from a number if different points such as from the basin of the waterfall or from one of the cliffs located in the middle of the waterfall. In addition there is also a platform that offers a spectacular view of the waterfall.
